- ➤ Genesis Youth Foundation is helping an Afghan refugee family that lost its patriarch to a heart attack, with a $10,000 campaign launched on May 21 reaching over $11,000 by May 23 to cover rent, utilities, basic needs, and counseling. The foundation will keep accepting donations for three to six months to fund job training for the mother and her daughter + to help 16-year-old Waliullah return to school after working nights caring for his siblings. - ➤ A Des Moines mother, Danielle Yonemura, is suing DMPS after alleging that mishandled bullying contributed to her child's suicide—she seeks accountability as the lawsuit moves forward. The Des Moines Register

- ➤ Clive City Council voted on May 22 to appoint Breanne Hocker to fill the vacant seat after former member Srikant Mikkilineni resigned in April to move to Arizona for a job promotion. Hocker, who has lived in Clive since 2020 and served on the Board of Adjustment for five years (she holds degrees from Luther College and the University of Iowa), will serve through the end of the year before an election in November selects a candidate for the remainder of the term.
