  • Today, hundreds of Memorial Day events will take place across Iowa, with celebrations at the Iowa Gold Star Military Museum in Johnston from 5 a.m. to 1 p.m., ceremonies at Burke Memorial Park and Highland Memory Gardens in Des Moines, a service at the Iowa Veterans Cemetery in Adel, and a parade in Indianola. The programs include breakfasts, gun salutes, vendor displays — all honoring veterans.  WHO 13

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Rescue crews spent over 10 hours searching the Des Moines River after a boating accident near Bussey Bridge before suspending efforts at night—officials say the search will resume early today to locate the missing boater.  KCCI

  • A 16-year-old from Clive spent months developing Pesto—an AI-powered cooking assistant that answers questions about anything kitchen-related after his time on Food Network's Kids Baking Championship. The Can Cook app is live today and will feature recipes and chat options by early summer.  KCCI

CRIME NEWS

  • West Des Moines police asked the public to help locate 13-year-old Dihanna Renee Hughes (last seen Saturday at 11:30 p.m. near 11th Street and Office Park Road) in the Des Moines metro area, describing her as a Black teen with brown hair and brown eyes wearing a dark long-sleeved shirt and leggings with a white star on the side.  KCCI

CULTURE NEWS

  • Chikin Lickin in Waukee brings Korean fried chicken to Iowa by serving wings, tenders, and combos—tossed in seven sauces ranging from sweet to spicy. Co-owner Thi Nguyen, a Roosevelt High School graduate, said the restaurant offers Asian street food and a pay-it-forward program as it celebrates its one-year anniversary this month.  KCCI

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Supporters and critics of the PBM reform bill are urging Governor Reynolds for action as the measure passed the legislature and awaits her decision by June 11th. Pharmacists say the law will secure fair reimbursements to prevent closures while business groups warn it could add nearly $340 million in costs to pharmacy care—Reynolds has not yet commented.  WHO 13
  • The 2020 killing of an unarmed Black man by a white officer sparked a big movement in Des Moines that grew into Black Lives Matter (now called Black Liberation Movement) and led to changes in local policing. Earlier this month, Gov. Kim Reynolds signed a law (banning citizen police review boards in cities with civil service commissions) that NAACP President Betty Andrews said now limits public oversight while local police report stronger neighborhood ties.  KCCI
  • Flags in Iowa will be lowered to half-staff from sunrise to noon today as Gov. Kim Reynolds orders the observance in honor of fallen heroes— the National League of Families POW/MIA flag will be flown on Capitol grounds all day.  The Des Moines Register
