- ➤ Iowa State Patrol said 82-year-old Hal Chase from Des Moines died at Unity Point Trinity Regional Medical Center after his Honda Fit ran a stop sign at Highway 20 and Webster County Road P-59 near Fort Dodge on Thursday—his car was hit by Diane Witt's Lincoln Nautilus from Arcadia while her passenger Stacie Segebart was treated. CRIME NEWS
- ➤ A Polk County jury convicted 61-year-old Derrick Andray Earnest of first-degree murder for fatally beating his 49-year-old girlfriend Holly Snowgren on April 19, 2024 in an alley east of Good Park — evidence from nearby cameras showed he used a wooden board, punched, and kicked her; he now faces life in prison without parole with sentencing set for July 23. - ➤ The Iowa DNR reported that Backbone Beach, Beeds Lake Beach, Black Hawk Beach and Nine Eagles Beach were not recommended for swimming after recent tests showed high E. coli levels + the department updates water quality information weekly via its website and hotline. The Des Moines Register

- ➤ Polk County is launching its Aging in Place program to help low-income seniors stay in their homes with free repairs such as installing grab bars & wheelchair ramps, backed by a nearly $1.3 million HUD grant. - ➤ On Friday night, Dowling Catholic High School seniors walked the commencement stage—John Foth, the varsity soccer captain who had put his season on hold to donate bone marrow to his sister Ava, was among them. Ava fights pediatric cancer at Stead Family Children’s Hospital in Iowa City and after a setback that sent her back to intensive care, her family hopes she will be moved to a regular room today. - ➤ On May 23, the Iowa Department of Health confirmed the first measles case in an unvaccinated adult in central Iowa—this is the first case in Iowa since 2019 and officials stress that the measles, mumps, and rubella vaccine offers the best protection. Radio Iowa
