CULTURE NEWS

  • A wave of new independent bookstores is set to open in Iowa this summer, with The Black Rose in West Branch (a women-owned boozy bookstore) scheduled to open on June 13 and Shelf Love in Des Moines planning a pop-up before a July launch. Night Owl Books in Humboldt has already drawn locals with board game nights, while Nos Books and Now Now Bookshop in Des Moines expand choices for readers—bringing fresh community spaces across the state.  Iowa Public Radio
  • Des Moines Performing Arts has launched a free summer series starting with an interactive art installation called Optik at Cowles Commons; the 20 six-foot-tall gyroscopes make music and reflect light when spun. The installation runs until May 26 and additional events—including circus acts, dancing, and live concerts—will follow in the coming weeks.  WHO 13

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Perry's Olivia Christensen and Woodward-Granger's Alexis Bogardus were recognized at the Governor's Scholar Recognition Ceremony on April 27 at the Iowa Events Center in Des Moines, where Gov. Kim Reynolds and Lt. Gov. Chris Cournoyer honored 424 Iowa seniors for outstanding academic achievement plus each school selected its top student from the first seven semesters. The statewide program, sponsored by the Iowa Governor’s Office, the Iowa High School Athletic Association and the Iowa Farm Bureau Federation, celebrated these students as future leaders.  The Des Moines Register

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Pharmacists rallied at the State House on Monday as lawmakers debated the PBM reform bill—aimed at ensuring pharmacies are reimbursed for the true cost of drugs and giving patients more choice. An amendment proposed by Representative Gustoff sparked strong opposition from pharmacist Representative Barker, who said it would hurt small pharmacies.  WHO 13

HEALTH NEWS

  • A study using CDC data found that 22.5% of Iowa adults engaged in binge drinking from 2011 to 2023, the highest rate in the nation, and the Iowa Department of Health reported 57% of adults used alcohol in the past 30 days (a rate above the national average).  The Des Moines Register
