  • An Eastern Iowa man uses his retirement funds to care for 63 corgis at Corgwyn Rehabilitation Sanctuary in Oelwein—he has run the non-profit since 2014 to rescue sick or special needs dogs on his six-acre property. Day-to-day expenses and medical care total about $5,000 a month, and he welcomes visitors by appointment while seeking more long-term donations for support.  KCCI

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Hotori on Walnut Street in Des Moines is a store that offers unique Asian home goods—items include a Japanese water kettle, Korean-made skincare and hand-crocheted scrub sponges with special meaning. Owners Nam Ho and Torri Myers opened the shop in mid-March and say Iowans have supported them, though the store is closed on Monday.  KCCI

CRIME NEWS

  • The Polk County Sheriff's Office is investigating a shooting at the Kwik Star gas station (Northeast 14th Street in north Des Moines) that happened early Sunday morning, and K-9 units are searching for a gun.  KCCI

  • High school seniors from ADM, DCG, Perry, Van Meter, Waukee, Waukee Northwest and Woodward-Granger received Governor's Scholar awards from Gov. Kim Reynolds and Lt. Gov. Chris Cournoyer at the 23rd Annual Governor’s Scholar Recognition Ceremony on April 27 at the Iowa Events Center in Des Moines—424 students statewide were honored in a program sponsored by the Iowa Governor’s Office, Iowa High School Athletic Association and Iowa Farm Bureau Federation.  The Des Moines Register

  • On Veterans Day in eastern Iowa, Sen. Grassley and Kirkwood Community College students recorded 12 veterans' stories from Polk, Linn, Dubuque and Johnson counties—preserving these accounts in the Library of Congress. Grassley said he has submitted stories from 95 Iowa veterans—hoping to hold another event in western Iowa for those wishing to share their histories.  KCCI
  • Lawmakers may not finish the state budget this week as twelve GOP senators block spending votes until the Senate votes on a pipeline bill that would set new land access rules for Summit Carbon Solutions—Senator Rowley said they are standing with property owners, and private meetings have not resolved the issue.  Radio Iowa
