EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Local school districts have set summer break dates that vary—Ankeny finishes on May 23, Des Moines ends classes on June 4 with teachers on June 5, and Johnston and Waukee close on May 30 while Karen Acres wraps up on June 17. - ➤ Iowa Migrant Movement for Justice rejected a Feb 24 letter from the House Government Oversight Committee demanding confidential donor, employee, and client records—information the group says is protected by attorney-client privilege. - ➤ Lieutenant Governor Chris Cournoyer announced her campaign for state auditor in 2026 as the current auditor, Rob Sand, is expected to run for governor. Gov. - ➤ Polk County Attorney Kimberly Graham, first elected in 2022 after replacing longtime attorney John Sarcone, announced she will run for another term in 2026—she highlighted her office’s work on revamping the driver’s license reinstatement program and conducting over 1,000 restorative dialogue sessions. - ➤ Des Moines City Council members approved rezoning nonprofit Urban Dreams' parking lot on May 5 to build six affordable row homes in the River Bend neighborhood for families earning 50% or less of the area median income. The plan includes two-bedroom and three-bedroom units with off-street parking, bicycle storage and shared greenspace — a move that repurposes an unused lot and marks a key step for the nonprofit as it celebrates its 40th anniversary.
