- ➤ Animal Rescue League of Iowa is set to receive 40 beagles from Wisconsin's Ridglan Farms as part of a multistate effort to rescue dogs from a controversial breeding facility. The transfer began on May 1 and the dogs will arrive mid-May to receive medical care & behavioral assessments. The Des Moines Register
- ➤ On Monday, May 4, 515 Run Club members walked a two-mile loop at Gray's Lake picking up trash after the city imposed a $4,300 fee on their weekly run (challenging the permit rule). Co-founder Nico Robinson said the club seeks fairer treatment for park users. The Des Moines Register
ACCIDENTS NEWS
- ➤ A fire that started in the attic of Evergreen Terrace Apartments on May 4 displaced roughly 70 residents from 2101 E. Caulder Ave. (local emergency services safely evacuated everyone to community shelters) and firefighters had the blaze under control by 8:15 p.m. The Des Moines Register
- ➤ A vehicle hit UnityPoint Clinic Family Medicine in Indianola Tuesday morning (no injuries were reported) and the clinic stayed open as the Indianola Fire Department responded and confirmed the area was safe. KCCI
- ➤ Residents of Cityville Apartments on Southwest 9th Street were evacuated Tuesday around 10 a.m. after high levels of natural gas were detected + crews ventilated and fixed the building so all residents returned inside. KCCI
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ El Bait Shop, a downtown bar that opened on May 5, 2006, celebrated its 20th anniversary yesterday on Cinco de Mayo by giving free taquitos with every pint. The bar won awards for its beer for 10 straight years + built a strong local reputation. KCCI
- ➤ Jaume Plensa's restored Nomade sculpture was reinstalled Tuesday, May 5 in the John and Mary Pappajohn Sculpture Park by workers from the Des Moines Art Center, marking the end of a careful restoration that brings new life to a local icon. The Des Moines Register
