EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ The U.S. Department of Education will resume collecting defaulted federal student loan payments on May 5, meaning Iowans behind on payments may have funds taken from wages, tax refunds, or Social Security (borrowers will soon receive email notices with repayment options). More than 5 million borrowers nationwide have been in default for over a year, and many Iowa graduates continue to face high debt after school. The Des Moines Register
- ➤ Norwalk High’s fashion show is happening this week to celebrate its expanding program. The United States Academic Decathlon will be held in Des Moines on Thursday—volunteers are needed. WHO 13
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Iowa lawmakers are likely to extend the 2025 legislative session past its scheduled May 2 end date as they work to finalize the state budget. Lawmakers are also considering pending proposals on eminent domain for pipelines, preschool funding, and tax measures — many of which have not yet been introduced. Iowa Public Radio
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Martinelli's recalled more than 170,000 bottles of apple juice due to patulin contamination that may cause temporary health issues — the Food and Drug Administration classified the recall as Class II. The recalled bottles were sold by Fareway, Hy-Vee, Target, Walmart and Whole Foods in Iowa and 27 other states, and have a best by date of Dec. 5. The Des Moines Register
- ➤ Data shows more Iowa children have sought behavioral health care since COVID, yet funding remains below pre-pandemic levels. The Iowa Department of Health and Human Services will overhaul the system by July 1 to tackle staff shortages and long waitlists for Medicaid services — leaving families to face ongoing challenges. - ➤ Des Moines Hoover High School’s boys soccer team forfeited all eight wins when officials learned on April 21 that a refugee player’s birth certificate was inaccurate—he is actually 20, which changed the record from 8-0-1 to 0-8-1; the player will stay in school to graduate in May and the team will still contend in the postseason.
