- ➤ Outlets of Des Moines announced Thursday that popular discount store Five Below will open this fall—adding to recent plans for The Burger Shop and a future Planet Fitness location to expand the mall's offerings. WHO 13
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ A central Iowa man, 28-year-old Tanner Bandy of Nevada, appeared in court after allegedly sending texts and a voicemail discussing plans for a mass shooting at an ISU commencement on April 17th—police found two guns and ammunition during a search of his residence and car, and a judge ordered him held pending further proceedings. - ➤ The Iowa House passed an anti-SLAPP bill on April 24th—designed to protect free speech—and sent it to the governor’s desk for review. If signed, the measure will enable quicker dismissal of lawsuits and may shift legal fees to the losing party. Iowa Public Radio
- ➤ Lawmakers in the Iowa House passed bills to exempt toilet paper and dietary supplements from state sales tax and to offer a $1,000 credit for radon mitigation systems—if signed into law, these changes will start in July. They also removed income limits for the child and dependent tax credit—proposals that now head to the Senate for review. Iowa Public Radio
- ➤ On Thursday, the Iowa House passed a bill that exempts laundry soap and detergent from state sales tax and is expected to lower general fund revenue by nearly $10 million next budget year. If signed, the exemption will start in July—The proposal now heads to the Senate for review. Iowa Public Radio

- ➤ An Iowa nursing home administrator surrendered her license after being accused of threatening workers and falsifying records at Harmony West Des Moines from November 2020 to June. Sammarra Smith agreed to the surrender as part of resolving regulatory charges—although her license had already expired in December and she may reapply in one year. The Des Moines Register

- ➤ Woodward-Granger had a big week as its girls' 4x100 relay team qualified for the Drake Relays with a season-best time of 52.28 seconds; the boys set personal records in relay races and both golf teams posted record-breaking scores at recent meets — marking a historic moment for school sports. - ➤ From April 15 to 21, Perry track athletes set new season bests in Greene County with freshman Ivan Willett finishing fourth in the 3,200-meter run in 11:21 and the Jayettes earning second place in the 400-meter dash and strong marks in the long jump and sprints.
