CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Des Moines police are asking for help finding a stolen 2017 Dodge Charger—its bright yellow body with a black hood, roof and trunk was carjacked during a test drive on Sunday in Des Moines, and although a 17-year-old suspect was taken into custody after switching plates in West Des Moines and a handgun was recovered from Illinois, the Charger remains missing. CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ The Des Moines Art Center is hosting a summer exhibition that shows 15 Haitian art pieces from the Waterloo Center for the Arts’ collection of over 2,000 works to highlight everyday Haitian culture and spirituality. The exhibition is affected by cuts in NEH funding—which canceled some events—as a free public symposium is scheduled for April 26. Iowa Public Radio

- ➤ Iowa lawmakers passed a bill that requires high school students nine through twelve to pass a civics test—similar to the one immigrants take to become U.S. citizens—to graduate. The bill now heads to Gov. Kim Reynolds who is expected to sign it into law. The Des Moines Register
- ➤ Simpson College named Terry Handley as interim president after college president Jay Byers died on April 17 — Handley was unanimously selected by the board on April 22 and will serve until a new president is elected at the May 16 meeting. The Des Moines Register

- ➤ Renovations have been approved for the old North Des Moines City Hall located on Sixth Avenue in River Bend. Townhall Associates LP will convert the historic building into a mixed-use project featuring a coffee shop on the first floor, five residential units upstairs, additional apartments, and a food hall for $13.1 million—with construction set to start this summer and finish in November 2026.
