Good morning, Des Moines. Here's your local news at a glance for Saturday, the 19th of April.

CRIME NEWS

  • The new Iowa Cold Case unit introduced playing cards with case details that were sent to prisons to help families get answers on unsolved crimes (including Haley Elliott’s aunt found dead outside a Des Moines bowling alley in April 2004, Bill Wood who was shot in his burned home in 2011, and Realtor Ashley Oakland shot in 2011) as officials hope tips will lead to justice.  Radio Iowa
  • A Nevada man named Tanner Bandy, 28, was arrested for stalking his ex-fiancée and threatening a mass shooting with an AR-15 at Iowa State's May graduation and is held (on a $200,000 bond in Story County Jail) as security measures are increased.  WHO 13

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Iowa Supreme Court removed Magistrate David J. Hanson (Fayette County) for doubting a sexual assault claim and using a racial slur in a separate case. His removal will take effect in 10 days unless he resigns beforehand.  The Gazette
  • The Iowa House passed a bill that bans citizen police review boards in cities with civil service commissions, a move that will dissolve at least six boards including those in Cedar Rapids — Iowa City — and Dubuque. The measure now heads to the governor’s desk and makes changes for how city service employees are disciplined.  Iowa Public Radio
  • On April 18, the Iowa House approved a proposal sent to the governor that set aside $2 million for fixing or removing unsafe buildings + nearly $12 million for helping residents repair disaster-damaged homes, created a Natural Hazard Mitigation fund, added rules for insurance umpires and adjusters, and streamlined emergency fund transfers to the Department of Management.  Iowa Public Radio

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Family Planning Council of Iowa said on April 18th that it received only about $1 million in Title X funding instead of the expected $2.2 million, a shortfall that now puts services for 30,000 low-income Iowans at risk. The executive director warned that without the full funding, clinics may have to cut services or close after six months.  Iowa Public Radio
