Here's your local news at a glance for Saturday, the 12th of April.
Good morning, Des Moines.
Des Moines families have many Easter egg hunt events planned for Easter 2025, with options ranging from free hunts and breakfast events to special themed hunts like sensory friendly and doggy editions.
Events will take place starting on April 12 through April 20 at various local venues including Altoona, Ankeny, and Urbandale.
A jury on Friday found 32 year old Joshua Carmody guilty of first-degree murder and first-degree burglary after he broke into the Ramada Inn on Army Post Road in 2024 and fatally shot Sayvon Propps, who fired in self-defense, and his sentencing date remains pending.
Iowa DOT confirmed that scammers are sending texts asking drivers to pay toll fees online and steal personal information (Iowa does not have toll roads or bridges and payment requests are never sent via text), so drivers should delete such messages and report them if needed.
A Des Moines man was found guilty of first degree murder for shooting 30 year old Sayvon Propps at a hotel on April 10, 2024 with evidence showing Propps fired in self defense before 31 year old Joshua Carmody returned fire—this jury conviction for murder, burglary, and possession of a firearm by a felon carries a mandatory life sentence.
A new report by the Maternal Mortality Review Committee found that nearly all pregnancy-related deaths in Iowa from 2019 to 2021 were preventable—nineteen out of twenty cases—and it recommends improved screening and coordinated care to address risk factors faced by Hispanic, black and Medicaid patients.
Iowa soils have warmed since late March with southern areas averaging 50 to 53 degrees and northeastern regions at 43 degrees, though frost can still occur when temperatures drop to 33 to 36 degrees.
Gardeners should wait to plant until later in April when forecasts show northwestern soils reaching 60 degrees by April 17 and central soils rising to 65 degrees — giving a safer sign for new growth.
