- ➤ Perry Community School District bands and the Central College wind ensemble performed a tribute concert Monday, April 7 at Perry Performing Arts Center to honor Perry student Ahmir Jolliff and Principal Dan Marburger, who were killed in the Jan. 4 shooting. The Iowa Bandmasters Association commissioned a four-minute piece called 'A Mere Moment: Bolero in Remembrance'—designed to offer hope and healing—that brought the community together. - ➤ A 6-year-old boy with autism who was reported missing Tuesday near Hy-Vee in Altoona was pulled from a pond and pronounced dead Wednesday (police say it appears to be a tragic accident) as investigators continue examining the scene. The Des Moines Register
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Des Moines police are seeking help to locate 14-year-old Alayna, who was reported missing around 1:45 p.m. on Wednesday near Fort Des Moines Park on the south side while in an emotional crisis and wearing a pink hoodie — black pants and brown boots. The Des Moines Register
- ➤ The Des Moines Police Department is asking for help to find Adam Cart (35) wanted on multiple felony warrants for eluding officers and a parole violation from a drug possession charge after he led a chase on March 22nd and was seen in the Watrous Heights neighborhood, and he is known to be armed and violent (if you see him, call 911 and do not approach him). GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ A portion of I-80 in the eastern Des Moines metro closed overnight Wednesday for the removal of the East 38th Street bridge and will see its westbound lanes close tonight from 10:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m. Friday. The Iowa DOT said weather will decide if a similar closure happens on Sunday, April 13, and motorists should follow marked detour routes. WHO 13
- ➤ On Tuesday, Polk County supervisors voted to revive a review program that will examine vacant positions to decide if they should be filled or reworked and approved changing the budget manager role into a budget director position with a higher pay range. Interim county administrator Frank Marasco said the moves aim to boost efficiency as Polk County works on a $365.1 million budget and addresses a $7.2 million shortfall. The Des Moines Register

- ➤ Community mental health centers in Iowa are worried about a bill that would reroute about $5 million a year from federal block grants through the state Department of Health and Human Services before reaching them. Flora Schmidt of the Iowa Behavioral Health Association asked lawmakers to delay the changes that will take effect in less than three months — providers fear budget uncertainty starting July 1. - ➤ Laura Federico published The Cycle Book to help women better understand and track their cycles—she hopes the guide will empower them to communicate their health needs with providers after facing challenges with infertility.
