COMMUNITY NEWS

  • In Urbandale, local officials honored 11-year-old Mya Cannon and her aunt, Alexis Newton, Tuesday evening for quickly saving a child from drowning at a local pool; an employee began CPR and the child is now recovering.  KCCI
  • The Downtown Farmers’ Market returns Saturday, May 2 in the Historic Court District for a 27-week season, featuring 305 vendors (43 of which are new) and extended hours in October. The market supports local agriculture and community programs with Saturdays from 7 a.m. to noon.  Downtown Des Moines

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Greater Des Moines Botanical Garden is launching a $9 million expansion in May to add a larger main entrance and a temporary 2,000 sqft facility that will be converted into offices. The local landmark expects the main entrance to be finished by late 2028 (serving nearly 150,000 visitors annually).  KCCI

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Gasoline prices in Iowa remain high today at $3.64 even though crude oil dropped after a two-week cease-fire was reached Tuesday; AAA Iowa noted that prices increased from $3.15 a month ago and expects adjustments at the pumps soon.  Radio Iowa

  • Rep. Randy Feenstra answered a question about education savings accounts at the Machine Shed in Urbandale today+he explained key points of the policy for local educators.  The Des Moines Register

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On Tuesday, Apr. 7, neighbors shared ideas for reusing the old northside fire station, suggesting a daycare, art gallery, and workspace as city staff gathers input for a future proposal; a session is planned Saturday, Apr. 11 from 10 a.m. to noon near River Bend & King Irving.  The Des Moines Register
  • The Iowa legislature passed a bill on Apr. 8 that raises the consumer loan interest cap to 36% per year to match federal rules (250,000 more Iowans could access funds next year) while opponents fear rising costs; Governor Reynolds is urged to sign the measure.  Radio Iowa
