- ➤ In 1968, Iowa teacher Jane Elliott led her third grade class in Riceville through a blue eyes—brown eyes exercise to show how discrimination felt after Martin Luther King Jr.'s shooting. She later repeated the exercise with adults and used test scores to show that feeling superior helped performance while warning that new state laws now limit teaching about systemic racism. - ➤ On Monday evening, the Des Moines City Council voted on a $986 million budget that partly cuts funding for Creative Visions’ Violence Intervention Program which kept one north side zone free of shootings for 791 days due to a $17 million shortfall from capped property tax revenue and rising service costs. The budget also proposed cuts to the sustainability office, changes to Birdland Pool operations, higher parking fines and utility fees, reduced mosquito abatement efforts and the elimination of a library social worker position—in steps that signal broader challenges for city services.
