COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ The downtown skywalk in Des Moines will get a colorful makeover as the city partners with Downtown DSM, Inc. and local design firms to revamp two sections with bright art and new lighting near Fifth Street and Keosauqua Way and a cloud-like effect at Fourth Street and Grand Avenue. The art projects are part of the Downtown DSM: Future Forward Vision Plan and are expected to be completed in April. The Des Moines Register
ACCIDENTS NEWS
- ➤ The driver injured in a rollover crash on Interstate 80 near Malcom is out of the hospital even though the accident on Thursday blocked traffic for over four hours when a fuel tanker rolled over and its diesel tank tore open—spilling 600 gallons as crews contained the spill with help from a private contractor while Iowa State Patrol investigates the cause. ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Senate commerce committee members amended a carbon pipeline bill on April 4 by removing landowner protections, ending its 25 year operating limit, and setting a one year deadline for permit decisions by the Iowa Utilities Commission. The Sierra Club of Iowa warned that the changes favor companies like Summit Carbon Solutions—making the bill more a corporate measure. Iowa Public Radio
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Sue Woody, director of the Des Moines Public Library, will retire in June after 21 years of service including seven as director—her last day is June 30 as the board begins a nationwide search for her replacement. The Des Moines Register
- ➤ A Senate committee advanced a bill on April 4 that may let school districts have paid or voluntary chaplains. The bill would require chaplains to be mandatory reporters and hold recognized certification—now it heads to the Senate floor. Iowa Public Radio
- ➤ On April 4, a Senate committee removed the part of the Iowa House bill that would have stopped private colleges from having DEI offices, while keeping restrictions on community colleges and state agencies from spending money on them. Sen. Ken Rozenboom said state groups should not use their funds to promote ideas and the saved money will go to the Iowa Workforce Grant and Incentive Program. Iowa Public Radio
- ➤ State lawmakers met a second funnel deadline that required most policy bills to pass one chamber and a committee in the other to stay under consideration as they shift focus to fiscal issues like tax policy and a state budget set to start July 1. Lawmakers advanced bills on issues such as phone bans, rural health care, and college tuition while several measures, including a speed limit increase, failed — unused bills can be reintroduced next session.
