GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The DOJ warned Iowa lawmakers to reconsider a provision in the energy bill that grants utilities a right of first refusal for building regional transmission projects — the agency said this rule could lessen competition and drive up costs for consumers. • Opponents of a bill that would limit lawsuits against pesticide makers urged House lawmakers to vote no as it faces a second legislative review—set to conclude by the end of this week. They claim the measure would shield companies from 'failure to warn' claims and reduce legal recourse for Iowans with cancer following a tight Senate vote last week.  The Des Moines Register
  • Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds signed a law banning cellphone use while driving unless it is in hands-free mode + the law will take effect on July 1.  Iowa Public Radio
  • Governor Reynolds signed a hands-free distracted driving law on Wednesday morning in Des Moines that will give police stronger tools and set a $100 fine for offenders starting July 1; the signing marked the culmination of three years of work by advocates, law enforcement, and grieving families. The governor noted that similar laws in Minnesota and Illinois—where crash rates dropped significantly—have shown positive results.  WHO 13

HEALTH NEWS

  • Psychiatric nurse practitioner Sue Gehling launched Classroom Clinic to offer telehealth mental health services for rural Iowa students after noticing local families lacked affordable care.
