CRIME NEWS
- ➤ A four-year-old child died in Ames when he was accidentally shot in an apartment on South Sherman Avenue Monday afternoon—police said a 911 call at 2:27 p.m. led EMS to transport him to MercyOne Medical Center in Des Moines where he later died, and an autopsy is set as the investigation continues. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ This morning, a House subcommittee approved a Senate bill that would bar D.E.I. offices and staff in city and county governments. Later this afternoon, a Senate subcommittee will review a House-passed bill that would end D.E.I. programs in community colleges, state universities and private colleges—actions that lawmakers say reflect deep divisions on the issue. - ➤ Iowa Supreme Court justices will grill Magistrate David J. Hanson at a hearing on Thursday over his use of a racial slur and bias in a sex-abuse case, and he said he did not know the term was offensive. The Judicial Qualifications Commission has recommended a 90-day suspension without pay—Hanson said he will take any required training and asked not to be removed because of his court's heavy caseload in Fayette County.
