- ➤ Three people escaped uninjured from a house explosion caused by a natural gas flow that occurred shortly after 11:00 a.m. Sunday morning on the south side of Des Moines at a home in the 4300 block of SE 11th Street — a preliminary investigation suggests a basement valve may have been accidentally opened and the probe is ongoing. - ➤ Officer Chase Breeser revived two guinea pigs rescued from a burning home over the weekend by giving CPR—firefighters had removed their cage from the blaze. KCCI

- ➤ Pella police arrested 56-year-old Marci Allen after she stabbed her husband with a knife on Sunday night in the 1200 block of Main Street—officers arrived to find him with multiple stab wounds—and he was flown to a Des Moines hospital where he remains in critical condition. KCCI

- ➤ Luis Lujan opened Nos Books, a new multilingual bookstore in Des Moines that highlights international authors and writers of color to bring diverse stories to the community. - ➤ The U.S. Navy will commission its new fast-attack submarine — USS Iowa — later this week when former Iowa First Lady Christie Vilsack oversees a ceremony at Submarine Base New London in Groton, Connecticut, set to start at 9:00 a.m. Central Saturday with about 800 Iowans and nearly 2,000 total attendees watching as the 377-foot vessel with a crew of about 140 enters service.
