COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On Saturday, about 100 protestors gathered outside the Tesla dealership (2601 104th Street) in Urbandale to express concerns over national policies and then walked closer to Hickman Road to invite more participation.  WHO 13

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • On Saturday, a six-acre field fire broke out in a wooded area north of Des Moines and crews from Des Moines with help from Ankeny, Johnston-Grimes, and Saylor Township battled strong winds—firefighters contained the flames just before 5 p.m.—with no injuries or property damage as an investigation into the cause began.  WHO 13
  • A single-engine plane that departed from Des Moines International Airport crashed in a residential area of Brooklyn Park, Minnesota at 12:22 p.m. Saturday with no survivors—authorities said they are investigating the cause.  The Des Moines Register

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Matt Heston, a math teacher at Knoxville High in central Iowa, advanced to the group finals for America’s Favorite Teacher contest after receiving strong votes from nearly 100 teachers as public voting runs until April 3. If he wins, he will earn a $25,000 prize, a trip to Hawaii & a feature in Reader’s Digest and plans to use part of the winnings for his daughter’s college fund, a Knoxville scholarship, & a vacation for his wife.  The Des Moines Register

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Iowa Board of Medicine reinstated Dr. Peter Boesen’s license after he served 51 months in prison for fraud + he must follow strict rules that ban him from starting a solo practice and require two years of board monitoring.  The Des Moines Register
  • City officials announced that a special census shows Ankeny’s population increased by 12.3% from 67,887 to 76,200 since 2020—making it the state’s fifth-largest city. The growth means the city will receive over $1.1 million more in road use tax funds annually after spending $1.4 million on the count.  The Des Moines Register

  • After his introductory press conference, Iowa head men’s basketball coach Ben McCollum answered questions from Hawkeye Headquarters reporter Blake Hornstein — he said he never expected the job and credited winning games and caring for players for his success.  WHO 13
