CRIME NEWS
- ➤ On March 20, a Des Moines police officer sustained head and jaw injuries when he fired his weapon during a struggle with 19-year-old Jose Daniel Rodriguez-Sanchez after the suspect allegedly attacked and tried to disarm him; Rodriguez-Sanchez remains hospitalized (expected to survive) while facing multiple charges amid an ongoing investigation. - ➤ Dozens gathered Wednesday evening at St. Joseph Catholic Church to pray for the safe return of Chris Leguisano, a 51 year old Des Moines woman (mother of four) who disappeared on Aug. 9 while driving a truck of belongings from Des Moines to Mexico as a favor for her ex brother in law whose lack of cooperation has slowed the FBI investigation. EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Roosevelt and Hoover high school students missed a few classes Wednesday morning to learn jazz from visiting musicians of the Herbie Hancock Institute of Jazz — a national peer-to-peer sextet with two renowned artists and six students. The group led a workshop for each school’s band and choir and will perform at Des Moines North today and Des Moines Lincoln on Friday before a Friday night concert at Noce Jazz and Cabaret. KCCI

- ➤ The Iowa House voted Tuesday to lower the legal age for handgun ownership from 21 to 18 by a vote of 79+18. The bill now moves to the Senate before it could be signed by Gov. Kim Reynolds if approved. The Des Moines Register
- ➤ State Rep. Brett Barker, a pharmacist, is pushing House File 852 to reform Pharmacy Benefit Manager practices after 31 pharmacies closed in 2024, leaving communities like Minden with a pharmacy desert—affecting 955,000 Iowans. The bipartisan bill faces criticism for potentially raising premiums and will move forward with a second legislative deadline next Friday, April 6. WHO 13
- ➤ On March 26th, the Iowa House passed a bill that will ban handheld cellphone use while driving—voted 84-11—to cut down on distracted driving. Gov. Kim Reynolds is expected to sign the bill and the law will take effect on July 1 with higher fines for violations. Iowa Public Radio
- ➤ Westbound lanes on I-80 were closed by the Iowa DOT at 10 p.m. Wednesday for overnight construction and reopened at 5 a.m. today; drivers used a detour via the U.S. Highway 65 bypass—taking Hubbell and Euclid avenues to I-235—to rejoin I-80. The Des Moines Register
