CRIME NEWS

  • Ames business owner and former nurse Carl Markley got 15 life sentences for using lies and pressure to force teen boys into sexual acts over many years+ his actions deeply hurt his victims.  The Des Moines Register

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Two food product companies secured state economic incentives for expanding their operations. Mrs. Clark's Foods in Ankeny will add a new building covering 90,000 square feet to create 12 jobs and Ingredion in Cedar Rapids will invest $47 million in a facility of 9,000 square feet to meet the growing demand for plant-based products — both earning tax benefits under the High Quality Jobs program.  Radio Iowa
  • Mrs. Clark's Foods in Ankeny received up to $360,000 in local tax rebates and $708,000 in state tax credits for its $25.7 million facility expansion that will add 12 jobs and boost juice production. Demolition will finish by the end of July and construction will start in August, with the new plant expected to complete by December.  The Des Moines Register

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Iowa Senate passed a bill (Monday, March 24th) that requires schools to limit cellphone use during class and lets districts set stricter rules while giving an exception for students with disabilities (the bill now heads back to the House).  Iowa Public Radio

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • A local affordable housing group got $8.75 million to buy the downtown Holiday Inn and turn it into 160 studio apartments for people at risk of homelessness; funds came from local sources including $1.25 million in city loans approved Monday. The nonprofit now will look for more money to pay for repairs and add support services — like job training and a food pantry — for its future residents.  The Des Moines Register
