FINANCE NEWS

  • The Iowa insurance commissioner ordered Elite Wealth Partners and its owner, Cory J. Dawkins, to repay $2.3 million to 15 investors, including a 19-year-old Iowa State student who lost $188,000 while trying to pay for her father's funeral, after finding that Dawkins misled clients into high-risk oil-and-gas investments and permanently barred him and his companies from offering securities in Iowa—$1.9 million is due immediately and $400,000 by March 31.  The Des Moines Register

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On Monday, the Iowa Senate passed a bill that changes how district judicial nominees are chosen by removing judges from commissions and giving the governor more power to appoint most commissioners. Senator Julian Garrett argued judges had too much influence while Senator Herman Quirmbach warned the change may politicize the judicial system.  Iowa Public Radio
  • The Urbandale Fire Department will use the old Econo Lodge motel for live fire training this week—firefighters will practice search and rescue, forcible entry, ventilation and fire suppression before the property is torn down as the city plans housing redevelopment after buying it in September.  KCCI
  • In December, the EPA banned the cancer-causing chemical TCE that can remain in groundwater — now Rep. Mariannette Miller-Meeks and other lawmakers have introduced a bill to reverse the ban. The agency is working on two sites in Des Moines to keep our water safe.  Iowa Public Radio
  • Des Moines Public Library cut two librarians and a social worker due to city budget cuts that affected Franklin Library programming. Library director Sue Woody said she will look for new partnerships to fill the gap — as state lawmakers consider changes to a law that currently shields libraries.  The Des Moines Register
  • The Iowa Senate passed a bill on Monday that will ban citizen police review boards in cities with a civil service commission. Five cities—Cedar Rapids, Coralville, Iowa City, Dubuque and University Heights—face ending their boards if the law takes effect.  Iowa Public Radio
  • The Iowa House passed a bill on March 17 that stops minors from using indoor tanning beds without a parent's written permission because the devices can raise the risk of deadly skin cancer + the bill will now go to the Senate for review.  Radio Iowa
  • The Waukee City Council approved a $400 million civic campus project Monday night that will transform 220 acres of farmland near the Sugar Creek Golf Course into a new city hall, library, lake, townhomes, single-family homes, senior living, and commercial space. The unanimously passed plan — expected to span 20 to 30 years — reflects the city’s fast growth.  KCCI
