CRIME NEWS

  • Family and friends of 36 year old Brandon Mitchell, who was shot by police on Jan 24 after officers mistook the sound of breaking glass for gunfire, marched from City Hall to the Police headquarters on Saturday to demand better training + changes in police practice.  The Des Moines Register
  • The Des Moines Police Department is searching for 15-year-old Elijah — who left his Fairgrounds home after a family disagreement on March 5 and was last seen wearing a red hooded sweatshirt, blue sweatpants, and rainbow-colored crocs.  The Des Moines Register

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Two large wind turbines were brought down in a cornfield near Nevada at 4 p.m. Wednesday when crews kept bystanders at a safe distance—drone footage shows smoke as the towers fell—. It is not clear why Goodwind Energy chose to demolish the turbines.  The Des Moines Register

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Des Moines Airport expects 50,000 passengers to travel between March 14th and March 23rd—a 13% increase over last year's spring break traffic. Airport officials advise travelers to use the grey parking lot and to arrive at least 90 minutes early since the garage is full.  WHO 13

  • Iowa Athletic Director Beth Goetz fired Fran McCaffery Friday and is now looking to hire a new men’s basketball coach to lead the team into upcoming tournaments—candidates like Darian DeVries face transfer portal and NIL challenges as the process continues. The search will focus on finding a coach who can immediately help stabilize the program.  The Gazette
