GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Sen. Janice Weiner (D-Iowa City) called on GOP lawmakers on March 14 to complete the school funding proposal nearly a month past its deadline; she warned that the 2.25% increase may force schools like Waterloo to cut jobs and raise taxes. The delay puts extra pressure on districts to meet budget needs on time.  Iowa Public Radio
  • The City of Des Moines has closed several downtown and East Village streets for a St. Patrick’s Day marathon that starts at 6:45 a.m. today and set closures for a parade on March 17 at noon—drivers should plan alternate routes accordingly.  The Des Moines Register
  • The Iowa House unanimously voted to establish training standards for recyclers handling electric and hybrid vehicle batteries – the Iowa DOT will approve a training program and issue certificates to those who complete it. The requirement will begin in 2027 – experts note the measure follows growing EV use with over 14,500 licensed vehicles recorded last year.  Radio Iowa
  • Des Moines will cut back its mosquito control program to address a $17 million deficit in the 2026 budget—ending regular spraying and testing in favor of one larvicide treatment in April or May. The changes come after a high mosquito count in 2024 due to a wet spring and warm weather.  The Des Moines Register

HEALTH NEWS

  • Ames local lab at Iowa State University is ramping up avian influenza testing as an outbreak leads staff to work longer hours and cover weekends while Dr. Phillip Gauger oversees up to 1,000—3,000 tests per week. The facility, which opened phase one a year ago with 150 employees, also trains farmers on biosecurity, and phase two is set to open in 2026.  KDSM 17
