COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Construction has continued since Feb. 27 on the Reichardt Community Rec Center in Des Moines, featuring a pool, basketball courts, and space for gaming and music.  The Des Moines Register
  • The Iowa Farmers Union calls for stricter grain bin rules to help prevent accidents at local farms. Two deadly incidents took place this year in Crawford County and Mahaska County, and while universities & volunteers currently lead education efforts, tougher regulations may face pushback from farmers.  KCCI

CULTURE NEWS

  • Kenny Wayne Shepherd will perform at Hoyt Sherman Place in Des Moines on May 3, celebrating the 30th anniversary of his debut album with two sets & a collection of hits spanning three decades. The event aims to reconnect fans with the full album listening experience.  Radio Iowa

EDUCATION NEWS

  • David Cook began his tenure as president of Iowa State University on Monday, succeeding Wendy Wintersteen after her retirement in January. Cook, an Ames native who graduated from ISU with his wife Katie, was welcomed at a campus reception.  KCCI
  • Des Moines Area Community College is hosting four presidential finalists at its Ankeny and Urban campuses this week as it nears a decision on its next leader. DMACC will release each candidate's name 24 hours before their visit, with Dr. Summer DeProw scheduled to appear tomorrow.  KCCI

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Iowa DNR will conduct controlled burns in wildlife areas in Boone, Dallas, Greene, Guthrie, Hamilton, Polk, Story and Webster counties to improve habitat and control invasive plants. The burns will begin in the next couple of weeks and last through mid-May under favorable weather conditions.  KCCI

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Iowa lawmakers are pressing Whirlpool for details on its plan to lay off 341 Amana workers starting in one week. Congresswomen Miller-Meeks + Hinson sent open letters asking if production will shift overseas and if affected workers will get support before Thursday.  KCCI

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Iowa Girls High School State Basketball tournament began on Monday in Des Moines and drew up to 20,000 visitors, generating $750,000 for local businesses. Forty teams competed this week and the overall economic impact, including the upcoming boys tournament, could reach $3 million.  KCCI
