ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Des Moines set a new daily high record at 65 degrees on Monday + surpassing the 61-degree record set in 1976. This was the city's second record high this year and its 13th daily record since October 2022. KCCI
- ➤ Iowa faces a snow drought from below-normal snowfall since December, affecting winter activities and local ecosystems as Des Moines recorded an 8.8-inch shortfall from its normal accumulation. Experts say more moisture is expected in coming weeks as temperatures rise. Iowa Public Radio
- ➤ Central Iowa Water Works’ nitrate removal facility has run for a month amid nitrate readings as high as 17 mg/l in the Des Moines + Raccoon Rivers, and treated water continues to meet EPA standards as experts point to warmer weather and shifting climate factors. KCCI
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Today, the Des Moines City Council reviewed a proposal from Des Moines Water Works to replace 20,000 lead service lines by 2037 at a cost of $200 million—partly funded by federal grants. The project will start in the Drake neighborhood and expand city-wide. KCCI
- ➤ On Monday, Feb. 9, the city council considered waiving rec center entry fees for youths under 19, including at the soon-to-open Reichardt center, while planning improvements for Cheatom Park. The council met at the new City Hall at 1200 Locust St — a venue replacing the old building. The Des Moines Register
- ➤ Today the Adel City Council is considering a proposal for a memorial honoring fallen officers along the Raccoon River Valley Trail north of the Dallas County Law Enforcement Center. Funding comes from Waukee, Gilcrest Jewitt, Stine Seed, Scheels and TMC Transportation and the group hopes to break ground this summer. KCCI
- ➤ Data shows the Safe+Sound app received 376 school safety tips in 2025 compared to 426 in 2024, even as 168 of 325 districts used it. Special Agent Kyle Bassett of the Iowa Department of Public Safety said the bureau will form behavioral threat assessment teams under Senate File 583. KCCI
