- ➤ Des Moines Register won 24 journalism awards from the Iowa Newspaper Association, including 11 first-place, 9 second-place, & 3 third-place prizes. Virginia Barreda received the Jay P. Wagner Prize for Young Journalists as part of the paper's recognition for outstanding local reporting. The Des Moines Register
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ House Study Bill 636, which bans school-library partnerships for districts without in-house libraries, advanced in the House Education Committee on Feb. 4 amid concerns over student resource access. Lawmakers plan to amend the bill before a full House vote, leaving schools like Des Moines Public Schools to seek alternative library support (often vital for extra media). The Des Moines Register

- ➤ Forty people from 20 countries became U.S. citizens on Friday, Feb. 6 at the Capitol rotunda (America 250 celebration) as Gov. Kim Reynolds and Secretary of State Paul Pate welcomed them to new rights. The Des Moines Register
- ➤ Grimes leaders are inviting feedback on two south side projects (a street rebuild along South James and 19th from South 11th to South 19th and a pond to boost Beaver Creek Watershed quality) with a public hearing on Feb. 11 at 5:30 p.m. at the Community Complex. KCCI
- ➤ Polk County will add flashing crossing signals, street lighting, and lower speed limits along NW 44th Street following a fatal cycling crash. The upgrades come after a study revealed a high number of crashes along the popular High Trestle Trail. The Des Moines Register
- ➤ State Rep. Matt Windschitl ended his congressional campaign on Feb. 6 and backed Siouxland Chamber of Commerce President Chris McGowan in the 4th District contest.
