Here's your local news at a glance for Tuesday, the 13th of January.
Good morning, Des Moines.
💼 Business
The McCoy True Value Hardware store in Indianola, which started as a harness shop in 1885, is closing due to declining business, with its final day on Saturday, Jan.
31 (merchandise is on sale until then). The closure will result in eight job losses for longtime employees.
🎓 Education
A report from the National Council on Teacher Quality showed that Iowa did not have state-backed paid parental leave for teachers—unlike two states that offer 12 weeks of fully paid leave.
The finding highlighted that some teachers hoarded sick days or left the profession due to a lack of benefits.
🏛️ Government
The U.S. Supreme Court denied a request from Shelby and Story counties to review their challenge against a proposed carbon dioxide pipeline.
County officials said their local ordinances aim to protect public health (though federal law may preempt these rules) in the ongoing legal battle.
🏥 Health
State inspectors reported numerous food safety violations (expired food, unclean kitchens, and mouse droppings) at Iowa restaurants during inspections from Nov.
13 to Dec. 31, including at a Des Moines eatery; some issues were fixed immediately while others demanded follow-up.
